Background Pattern

When a loved one passes, the Church surrounds them with prayer and supports the family with compassion and hope in the promise of eternal life. Suppose you have recently lost a loved one and are looking to have funeral services through the St. Gaspar Family of Parishes. In that case, communication typically occurs through the funeral home you are working with to make arrangements. Each parish within the Family takes care of its funerals. After the date and time for the funeral have been confirmed, a trained member of the bereavement team from the parish hosting the funeral will reach out to you to set up a mutually agreeable time to have a funeral Mass or a Memorial Service.

A Catholic funeral typically consists of three main parts: the Vigil (Wake), the Funeral Mass, and the Committal. The Vigil is a time for prayer, scripture, and remembrance before the Funeral Mass. The Funeral Mass itself is the central liturgy focused on offering prayers for the deceased and instilling hope in the Resurrection. Finally, the Committal consists of final prayers said at the graveside or resting place.

When planning a funeral for a loved one, coordinate with the funeral home to arrange a date and time that works for both the church and the cemetery. You will also need to select scripture readings and music; we will provide a list of approved options to help you make these choices. Additionally, consider how family members would like to be involved in the service, such as serving as readers, gift bearers, or pallbearers.

It is essential to be aware of the church’s guidelines regarding funerals. For burial and cremation, note that while cremation is permitted, the ashes must be laid to rest in a sacred place and cannot be kept at home. Catholics in a state of grace may receive Holy Communion during the Funeral Mass. Eulogies may be offered at the Vigil or graveside, but please remember that the focus of the Funeral Mass is on praying for the soul of the deceased.

Our parish offers various support services, including music ministry, altar servers, and lectors. We also have Stephen Ministers, who are specially trained lay ministers, who are available to listen and guide you through the bereavement process.
